Well, it’s the last day of January and Valentine’s Day is two weeks away. Cindy and I never got too much into celebrating Valentine’s more than a small gift and a dinner out. Still, I figured that this Valentine’s Day, being my first without my love, would be particularly difficult. Looking at Facebook I saw that several of my female friends felt the same way. They were dreading the day with a passion (pun slightly intended)! That’s when it hit me that I should see if anyone wanted to be my “pretend valentine.”
I would pick someone and they would be my valentine in name only. Nothing romantic. After all, my heart isn’t ready for that yet and, to be honest, I don’t know if it ever will be at this point. Anyway, I would send my “valentine” some roses and maybe some other gifts and we would talk on February 14. If the lady I chose was local, we would perhaps spend some time together and go out to dinner. Again, nothing romantic; this would just be a way to turn a potentially bad day into a fun one.
So, with that in mind, I posted the following message to my Facebook status:
This is for my single, female Facebook friends.Valentine's Day is coming up and I'm looking for a "pretend valentine."…
The responses have greatly exceeded my expectations. I had a lot of Facebook friends volunteer to be my pretend valentine. Even a few of my male friends offered. Some people mistook my intention and thought that this was an act of loneliness when, in all actuality, it was simply a desire to have fun on a day that may not be so much fun otherwise.
At any rate, I’m proud to say that I have found my valentine. I won’t mention any names because I don’t have her permission to do so. But, I can say that I have already ordered her some roses for the big day (and maybe another gift or two). I’m really looking forward to this. It should be a lot of fun.
Maybe this idea will catch on and more people will have pretend valentines and we can turn this oft-dreaded day into one that is a lot of fun. Who knows?
